The truth is – we, Janne and Fredrik – never wanted to start Metal Mayhem. We’re not event pros. Far from it. We’re just fans.
We want to be front row, beer in hand, headbanging – not losing sleep over permits, travel arrangements, or whether we’ll sell enough tickets to avoid going broke.
For years, people said it was impossible to build a recurring metal festival on Åland. Too small an audience. Too extreme a genre. Too much work. No money in it.
And, well – we can’t argue with the money part. But the rest? We disagree!
We believe Åland is the perfect place for a metal festival. It’s the natural meeting ground for metalheads from Finland and Sweden. It’s a beautiful island with killer energy – and yet, very few metal bands have played here. That needs to change.
Åland has had a vibrant metal scene since the late ’80s, when Janne helped pioneer it through bands like Deuteron and Bröilers öf Death – Åland’s first thrash bands.

Today, many of Åland’s top musicians play in extreme metal bands– Concrete Winds, Unpure, Obnoxious Youth and more. And Åland metalheads? We’re everywhere!
So, out of passion, stubbornness, and a healthy dose of naïveté, we decided to defy the odds. The idea came in the fall of 2024. On December 28, 2024, the very first Metal Mayhem filled Kino Nightclub in Mariehamn with noise, sweat and chaos.
Despite zero marketing budget, minimal prep, and a constant feeling of “what the hell are we doing?” – over 200 people showed up. And it ruled. We made no money. But the energy, the support, and the feedback from bands and fans? That was enough.
Now, Metal Mayhem is more than a night. It’s a beginning.
We know we’ll never be the biggest. But we’ll aim to be the most honest.
Twice a year, we want to give every visitor and band the time of their lives. We’ll never outspend the giants – but our beer will be colder, our riffs heavier, and our passion untouchable.
